Ben Barnes - PoliticianWhile a state representative, Ben Barnes also served as chairman of the House Rules Committee and as a vice-chairman of the Banks and Banking Committee. Prior to his role as Lt. Governor of Texas Barnes fulfilled the role of Speaker of the House where he supported the passage of the Consumer Credit Code, Clean-Air and Water-quality legislation, established programs for the elderly and passed legislation on behalf of the mentally ill and handicapped. Ben Barnes' career as a politician was a fulfilling. During his tenure as Lt. Governor of Texas he paid a great deal of time and attention to education. Ben Barnes witnessed the creation of two nursing schools, a dental school, three medical schools and four senior colleges. As a proponent of higher education Ben Barnes worked within Democratic and Republican Party lines by increasing allocation for higher learning by 300 percent. He backed legislation in the area of mass transportation, and legislation creating the Texas Rehabilitation Commission. Throughout his four terms in the two offices, Barnes was also interested in the issue of higher education. |
